A new library feasibility study, prepared by Oudens Ello Architecture in coordination with the town of Orleans and the Snow Library Feasibility Task Force, is available to the public. Read the report here.

The Board of Library Trustees and the Friends of Snow Library are asking for your help and your vote.

The Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program awards grants that support the design and construction of library buildings. The Snow Library Trustees and Staff have been working on a grant application that’s due by May 31, 2024.

In the application, we must demonstrate the town’s support for a new library building. That’s where you come in.

A vote to approve $150,000 at Town Meeting will allow Orleans to go forward with the application. If awarded, the grant can cover a large part of the construction cost for a new building. Approval of these funds is required for the application. If the town does not receive the grant, the design funds will not be expended.

Our Sailor’s Valentine craft program was “snowed out” on Feb. 13. It has been rescheduled to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. There are still a few spots left; please call the library at (508) 240-3760 if you would like to participate.

Snow Library will be closed and all programs cancelled on Tuesday, February 13 due to the snowstorm.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend this second and final public forum held by the Task Force at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 in the library’s Craine Room.

Come to a public forum on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. to hear what the Snow Library Feasibility Task Force, with support from the Trustees and the Friends of Snow Library, is doing to build a new library. The following classes are offered during week six of the Fall Lifetime Learning session. All are available online via Zoom as well as in person at the library’s Craine Room.

On Monday, Oct. 30, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Lifetime Learning is proud to offer a course by filmmaker Allison Argo: “Lending a Voice to Those Who Are Silenced.” Allison has films which have been shown on PBS and National Geographic and have won multiple awards. In this course she will share three of her films, discuss the story behind each, and answer questions. The first film is “Crash: A Tale of Two Species.” . . .

The following classes are offered during week four of the Friends of Snow Library’s 2023 Fall Lifetime Learning session. All are available online via Zoom and five are also available in person at the library’. All are recorded.

Due to the tropical storm conditions expected this weekend, Saturday’s book sale has been cancelled.

The Friends of Snow Library's Fall Lifetime Learning session begins on Tuesday, Sept. 26 and ends on Nov. 16 with 24 new courses presented in two formats: online via Zoom or in person in the Craine Room at the library. This session has something for everyone and includes many popular past presenters as well as exciting new ones, including an Emmy-winning nature film
director.

The Friends of Snow Library Book Sale Committee is looking for gently used books for their very successful weekly Book Sales. Paperback “Beach Reads,” newer books in all subject areas, art books, poetry, classics, and children’s books are sought. The Friends also sell a variety of hardcover books, audio books, CDs and DVDs, and will gladly consider what you have to offer if it is clean and in good shape. (No textbooks, encyclopedias, or travel books, please).

Donations may be made between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Saturday Book Sales, or you may drop off up to two bags or boxes of books at Snow Library during business hours. The Friends do make house calls on Cape Cod for large donations. Call Snow Library for more information. Proceeds from the Friends’ book sales go right back into the library to purchase museum passes, periodicals, children’s programs, and new technology.

Come to the library any day we are open and register for the summer reading program. You’ll receive a logbook to record your reading activity. For every three hours that you read, you will receive a small prize. You may earn one prize per week. The program continues until Aug. 10.

The Snow Library Trustees, staff, and Friends want to offer our sincere thanks to all the citizens who attended Annual Town Meeting on May 8th and voted in favor of a feasibility study to build a new Snow Library. We’ve already met with the Orleans Select Board to discuss the endeavor and will keep you updated on our progress.

Come to the library at 4 p.m. every Wednesday and enjoy live music in the Craine Room. A spring concert series begins May 3, continuing weekly through June 14. The final concert will be held outdoors on the village green. The shows are sponsored by the Rowena Myers Trust. Seating is first-come, first-served, and admission is free.

The  Friends of Snow Library’s 2023 winter-spring Lifetime Learning session concludes the week of April 24 with three one-time-only courses while three other courses wrap up.  Of special note: on Wednesday, April 26, from 10:30 to noon, Steve Gass will present a free class on “Building Our Future: The Case for a New Snow Library” about charting a new path forward for this heart of the community of Orleans. 

The Friends of Snow Library’s 2023 Winter-Spring Lifetime Learning session continues next week with courses available online and in person in the library’s Craine Room. All are recorded and available for viewing again. 

Teacher and yoga instructor Katherine Dowd Gulotta offers “Keys to Wellness at Any Age: Breathing & Yin Yoga” on Tuesday, April 11 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. as the Friends of Snow Library’s spring Lifetime Learning series continues. The first class in her two-part course focuses on “The Healing Power of Breath,” exploring easy no-stress practices that immediately boost health.
