Thank you for your patience as we continue to learn the new software system which was implemented throughout the 36 CLAMS libraries on Feb. 27.

CLAMS and library staff have been working diligently in the days leading up to and following the implementation to ensure a smooth transition between software systems, but inevitably there are unexpected glitches. Many of you have experienced problems logging into either the CLAMS catalog or Libby/Overdrive. CLAMS is prioritizing all the problems people are reporting, and successfully logging into your account and utilizing eMaterials is high on the list.

Find ‘A Place for the Genuine’ in week 2 of Lifetime Learning

A course on American poetry, subtitled "A Place for the Genuine" and led by Joseph Auciello, is among the new Lifetime Learning offerings in the week beginning Monday, March 6.

Registration for Lifetime Learning opens Feb. 6

The Friends of Snow Library will begin accepting registrations for the 2023 winter-spring Lifetime Learning Session on Monday, Feb. 6. Classes begin on Monday, Feb. 27 and cover a broad range of topics, from the Ukraine War to Irish mythology, American poetry to Cape Cod coyotes, the art of Edward Hopper to the music of the Baroque. Notice to patrons regarding new integrated library system

On February 27, the CLAMS network will roll out new staff and patron software. Here is what you need to know:

All out-of-network interlibrary loans, including from Commonwealth Catalog, will be suspended beginning Friday, Feb. 3 and will resume on Monday, Feb. 27.

Your current reading history will not be transferred to the new system at the outset. More information will be provided when available.

Puzzle your way through winter days

Looking for a way to pass the time on a cold winter day? Come to the library and borrow a jigsaw puzzle. You’ll find our puzzle collection at the end of the center aisle in our non-fiction area. Puzzles may be borrowed for two weeks and must be returned to Snow Library (please avoid using the book drop; bring them to the front desk).

Snow Cinema returns

Come to the Craine Gallery at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays through Feb. 1 and see a movie on our big screen. The film showings feature recent releases on DVD. "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris" (PG), starring Lesley Manville and Isabelle Huppert, will be shown on Jan. 11; "Ticket to Paradise" (PG13), starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney," on Jan. 18, and "The Banshees of Inisherin" (R), starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, on Jan. 25. On Feb. 1 we will show "Tár" (R), starring Cate Blanchett. Admission is free.

Updated guidelines for book donations

Book donations to the Friends of Snow Library are being accepted on Saturdays during book sale hours, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and throughout the week during the library’s open hours. Please bring no more than two boxes or bags of books in excellent condition. DVDs and music CDs also accepted. For fiction, the more recent the publication date, the better.

Exploring film, politics, music & more

The Friends of Snow Library’s fall Lifetime Learning session closes with a last round of courses next week in the Craine Room. Topics include film, politics, history, photography, and the Great American Songbook. Some classes are new, some continuing, and many are offered via Zoom as well as in person.

Leigh and David Fisher wrap up their “Political Potpourri” film series with a screening of “Casablanca” from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14. The classic 1942 movie stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and is set against a background of political intrigue in North Africa as World War II begins. A discussion follows the screening. . . .

The Friends of Snow Library's 2022 fall Lifetime Learning session continues with three new courses and five continuing ones. Week seven kicks off with a screening of "The Way We Were," starring Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand, at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7 as Leigh and David Fisher's Reel Time series (theme: "A Political Potpourri") resumes. On Tuesday, Nov. 8, entomologist Larry Dapsis introduces "Forensic Entomology: Who Dunnit?" at 10:30 a.m., and later that day, at 1:30 p.m. poli sci professor Russ Leng launches his two-part course titled "The Trial of Vladimir Putin and Russian-American Relations After the Ukraine War." …

Lifetime Learning looks at ‘Our Torn Supreme Court’ in November

Politics and government take center stage as Lifetime Learning brings back Barbara Comstock, political commentator on ABC, CNN and PBS, and Richard Finnegan, poli sci professor at Stonehill College, to lead classes on Congress and the Supreme Court in November.

Comstock, also president-elect of the bipartisan U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, will talk about respect for the rule of law and the legislative process in her Zoom-only lecture titled "On the Brink of the Midterms" from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Finnegan will explore how two ideas of judicial interpretation - originalism and liberal interpretation - are creating "Our Torn Supreme Court" from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3. Finnegan's course continues on Nov. 10 and Nov. 17. . . .

Lifetime Learning offers rare opportunities to stargaze on Cape Cod

A live interview with Broadway musical stars and a course on the Cape’s night sky top the list of new offerings from the Friends of Snow Library as their fall Lifetime Learning session continues.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Jung-Ho Pak, artistic director and conductor of the Cape Symphony, talks with three Broadway performers who will be featured in the Symphony’s “Bravo Broadway” show later next week. Dee Roscioli is best known for starring as the witch Elphaba in Wicked and as Cher in The Cher Show . Hugh Panaro starred as the Phantom in over 2,000 performances ofThe Phantom of the Opera. Scarlett Strallen starred as Gwendolyn on Broadway in Travesties and as Mary in Mary Poppins on Broadway and in London. Zoom only.

Later on Tuesday Harvard astronomy professor Dimitar D. Sasselov, presents “Cape Cod’s Night Sky.” In an afternoon lecture in the library’s Craine Room from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Sasselov will discuss how to spot planets, stars, constellations and more in various seasons over the Cape, which boasts one of the darkest skies on the Eastern Seaboard. In the early evening, he’ll set up a telescope and lead a star-gazing session on Orleans’ Skaket Beach from 5:30 to 7 p.m. . . .
