Political films, Georgia O'Keefe, and the photography of Dmitri Kasterine

Lifetime Learning continues the week of October 24 with a new film series presented by Leigh and David Fisher, a look at the life and art of Georgia O’Keefe, and a slide talk with photographer Dmitri Kasterine, who has captured portraits of iconic 20th century figures such as Mick Jagger, David Hockney and Queen Elizabeth II, to name a few.

The Fishers return for their 12th season of “Reel Time,” this time showing “A Political Potpourri” of films. The screenings, each followed by a discussion, begin on Monday, Oct. 24 with “All the President’s Men,” starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffmann, from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Beth Stein, art historian, presents a class on the iconic American artist Georgia O’Keefe, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26. During her 70-plus-year career, O’Keefe combined her unique artistic vision with techniques usually reserved for the camera lens to capture intimate paintings of flowers and desert landscapes, among other subjects.

Join Dmitri Kasterine, photographer, for “Who How When Where: 60 Years of Photography” from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 27. Kasterine’s illustrious career includes photographic work for magazines such as Vogue and GQ, stills for Stanley Kubrick movies and portraits of cultural figures, from Steve Martin to Jean-Michel Basquiat, Liv Ullman to Germain Greer, David Niven to Patricia Highsmith. His work was recently displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in London and is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Also new to Lifetime Learning: history teacher Roger Smith discusses his debut novel, “The Conductor,” book one in his historical novel series “Rian Krieger’s Journey, A Historical Saga in Nine Parts,” on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Two slots are offered for this class, the first from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and the second from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Continuing courses include Joseph Auciello’s study of “Dubliners” by James Joyce, Steve and Jeff Bornemeier’s “Novels and Ideas: Awakenings,” Kerry Brown’s class on “As You Like It” and Joseph Marchio’s “Musical Odyssey Beginning in Ancient Times.”

Unless otherwise noted, most courses include both an in-person and online option, accommodating up to 60 registered participants in the Craine Room while the class is simultaneously Zoomed and recorded. Zoom registration is unlimited.
