GALE databases allow you to conduct research in biography, world history, religion, economics and other academic fields, as well as gardening, culinary arts, careers and more.

Salem Press offers a virtual reference shelf covering topics in literature, history, science, health and careers. This database includes the Magill's Literary Annual  (1977 - present), which provides online access to 38 years of past annuals, comprising more than 7,200 reviews and essays on three decades of the most important fiction and nonfiction. Snow Library card needed.

Shakespeare ePlays is presented by Lerner Digital and includes the full text of 20 plays online. Username: snowlib. Password:  ebooks.

This database allows users to search the Massachusetts Historical Commission database for information on historic properties and areas in the Commonwealth.


A to Z Food America

(Username is your Snow Library card number; password is SnoLib)

Contains traditional cuisine cookbooks for all 50 states and the six U.S. regions as well as each of the 33 major U.S. ethnic groups.  Browse and download articles on ingredients, instructional videos on how food is made, historic cookbooks dating back to the late 1700s, original TV food commercials dating back to the 1940s, historic menus, ads and more.

A comprehensive database of information on the U.S., with the option to explore the country as a whole or research a specific state or territory. A to Z the USA provides in-depth access to a broad range of topics, including official state animals and plants, historical timelines, modern and antique downloadable maps, national symbols, state symbols, food and recipes, demographics, culture and society, geography learning resources, government and politics.  All images and maps in A to Z the USA are hi-resolution and can easily be downloaded or printed for royalty free use.

Starting with a country snapshot and cultural overview, topics include: climate, food and recipes, history, language, maps, money and much more. Financial literacy tools from Weiss Ratings & Grey House Publishing, featuring independent, unbiased financial strength ratings of banks, credit unions and insurance companies. Offers conservative buy-hold-sell ratings of thousands of stocks, mutual funds and exchange traded funds. Rates Medicare Supplement Insurance - which plan to choose, how much it will cost, compare rates & plan benefits. Allows you to create your own personal account to create a watchlist, get upgrade/downgrade notifications and log in from anywhere.

Newspaper Archive Database

Newspaper archive is an online newspaper archive fully searchable by keyword, date, place, and title. It contains more than 16,000 different titles from every U.S. state and twenty-eight countries around the world. You will need to provide your Snow Library 13-digit barcode number to access the database. Then you will need to set up an account by entering your e-mail address and creating a password.

Research family history and lineage. Download obituaries, U.S. Census data, newspaper articles, photographs, immigration records and more from two comprehensive online databases.

Ancestry.com is one of the most popular digital resources for genealogical research. It’s a vast collection of historical records and photographs built through an online collaborative that allows users to share their findings. This database is for in-library use only.

Music & Movies

Hoopla is a web and mobile media streaming platform that allows you to download or stream movies, music, ebooks and audiobooks. To get started, click on the Hoopla logo and fill out the short registration form with your 13-digit Snow Library card number and email address. You'll be asked to create a password. Once you're registered, visit the Hoopla website main page to log in and begin streaming. There’s a circulation limit of 8 materials per patron per month.

Freegal Music allows you to stream music (up to three hours per day) and download up to three songs per week. Have your Snow Library card handy to log in.

Foreign Language Courses

Mango Languages: Online courses in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Latin, Hebrew, Irish, and Ancient Greek. You must have a Snow Library card to access Mango. Watch a user tutorial here.

Transparent Language: Available through Gale Databases. This online instruction program includes classes in more than 95 languages, plus ESL materials for native speakers of more than 26 languages. Mobile apps also available. You must have a Snow Library card to use this program.
